The Dongshih Forest Area is located in Dongshih Township, Taichung County. The elevation here is around 380 to 500 meters. Towards the east of the area is the Central Mountains and the west the opening of the Da-an River. The area is also known for the mountain mists that shroud the valleys after rains and at sunrise and sunset. The forest here consists of mainly fir trees, tung trees, maple trees, and camphor trees. The average temperature is 23℃. The farm roads, access roads, hillside ditches, bench terraces and other soil and water conservation facilities were constructed by the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau Second Engineering Office when the Forest Area was first set up.
Climate: average temperature 21℃
     average temperature in January 15℃
     average temperature in July 55℃
Area: 12 hectares
Annual rainfall: 2,250 mm
The Dongshih Forest Area is part of the Shuangsi River basin within the warm and humid north-eastern Taiwan climate zone. Average temperature throughout the year falls between 15 to 28℃ with abundant rainfall over 3,000mm per year. The water for the perennial river here comes mainly from rainfall in the nearby watershed. During the typhoon season, heavy rains often carry a great quantity of debris flows, causing damage to the dikes along the riverbank and create thick deposits on the riverbed.
