Renshan Botanic Garden, formerly named Renshan Nursery, sits along the upper stream of the Dongshan River. It is the largest plant nursery in Yilan County, covering an area of 100 hectares. The garden cultivates mainly bamboos and seedlings of pine and cypress trees as well as flowers and many other types of trees.
The Garden is surrounded by lush green valleys. Thanks to its unique geographical environment , it has spectacular scenery, a great variety of plants, and an abundance of birds, insects, amphibians, and many other species. The primitive forest landscape is a stone’s throw away. The authorities are currently promoting the botanic garden to national status.
To further preserve its natural environment, visitors are required to follow a mountain trail on foot before entering the Garden itself. The trail is an intersection of rubble paths and steps, allowing visitors to climb higher into the hills in a comfortably shaded surrounding. At the highest viewpoint of the garden, the Pacific Ocean, the Gueishan Island, and the Lanyang Plains are all within sight.
After much restoration and conservation efforts since 1976, the Dongshan River is now well known for maintaining the balance between protection of natural environment and prosperity of human society. The Dongshan River Park is one of the top tourist attractions in Yilan.
