Jhongliao Township is surrounded by mountains with odd flat patch and rice fields scatter the hillsides. Soil in this area is not only infertile but also prone to erosions, which makes large-scale machine cultivation extremely difficult.
Closed by the epicenter of the 921 Earthquake in 1999, this area was heavily struck and seriously damaged on landscape, houses, public facilities, and agricultural production.. The Soil and Water Conservation Bureau at the Council of Agriculture has dedicated a great amount of effort in the subsequent restoration process. The aim was to create a new landscape for the villages based on previous experiences in Village Renewal programs.
The two major tourist attractions in Jhongliao are the Chessboard Rock in Fusheng village and the Taiwan incense cedar trees in Cingshuei village. The name of Chessboard Rock came from the legendary sign of deities playing chess on the gigantic rocks. Nowadays, surface of the rock is full of cracks in which grasses have rooted and enhancing the legend of chessboard. The nearby Cingshuei village is reknown for its many towering ancient trees. There is a cluster of majestic Taiwan incense cedar trees, which have grown for at least 70 years. The nearby Longfeng Waterfall and diversified plant species has made this area a major outdoor recreation spot.
