Located at the intersection of the Eurasia and Philippine Sea plates and formed by the result of the plates’ collision, Taiwan is a comparatively new island in the history of the Earth. Due to the prevalence of mountainous terrain over plain areas coupled with highly dense population, the development of slopeland becomes inevitable.
Fragile geology and soil, accompanied by torrential rain caused by typhoons leads to severe erosion. Furthermore, increasing population and overdevelopment brings even greater damage to the land. Hence, flash floods, soil erosion, debris flow, as well as landslides continuously threaten the Earth and those dependent upon it, which makes soil and water conservation more and more important.
